Protect Your Home with Fortified Roofing: Strength Built to Last

Your roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements. With a fortified roof, you can enhance your home’s resilience to extreme weather and enjoy long-term peace of mind. At Apex Roofing, we specialize in installing and upgrading roofs to meet the highest standards of strength, durability, and safety.

What Is a Fortified Roof?

Founded in 1977 by Property Casualty Insurance Industry, the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) fortified certification is a program that assesses and certifies residential and commercial building for their ability to withstand natural disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. The certification process involves an evaluation of the building’s construction materials, design, and features, as well as its location and surrounding environment.

Researchers at IBHS test different methods for reducing property damage in a $40 million research facility in South Carolina. There, they subject full-size home to realistic storm conditions, including wind-driven rain, hail, and winds up to 130 mph.

A fortified roof goes beyond traditional roofing standards by incorporating advanced materials, installation techniques, and design enhancements to withstand severe weather, including high winds, hail, and heavy rain. Developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS), the Fortified Roof program is a proven system to reduce damage, lower insurance costs, and increase your home’s value.

Benefits of a Fortified Roof

1. Superior Weather Protection: Fortified roofs are engineered to endure hurricanes, tornadoes, hailstorms, and other severe weather events. By sealing vulnerable areas and reinforcing key components, these roofs significantly reduce the risk of water intrusion and structural damage.

2. Lower Insurance Premiums: Many insurance providers offer discounts to homeowners with fortified roofs. Upgrading to this standard can save you money while protecting your home investment.

3. Increased Home Value: A fortified roof isn’t just about protection—it’s a selling point. Homes with fortified roofs often attract higher resale values due to their added durability and safety features.

4. Peace of Mind: With a fortified roof, you can rest easy knowing your home is better equipped to weather the storm. Whether it’s protecting your family or securing your belongings, you’ll enjoy confidence in your roof’s strength.

Fortification Process

1. Evaluation: We will have an evaluation of the roof conducted by a third party inspector to ensure it meets the requirement for the FORTIFIED roof standard. We will also collect additional documentation when necessary.

2. Application: A licensed inspector will submit all necessary documentation to IBHS for verification. IBHS will then issue certification, verifying that your property is fortified.

3. Certificate Designation: Upon a successful audit from IBHS, your FORTIFIED Designation will be awarded and a certificate will be issues. This certificate will assign your property with an FEH# that will remain throughout the life of your property.

Certified Installation Experts

High-Quality Materials

We use only the best materials to meet fortified standards, from hurricane clips to reinforced underlayment, giving your roof unmatched strength and longevity.

  • Impact Resistant Shingles: In hail-prone areas, FORTIFIED requires shingles tested by IBHS to show they can withstand hail up to 2 inches in diameter. These shingles outperform typical Class 4 shingles when tested against realistic hailstones and will better protect your home.
  • Fortified Fastening System: Fortified requires rink-shank nails with 3X the holding power instead of smooth nails to help keep the roof deck attached to your home in high winds.
